Group Treatment: Breaking Patterns
Disclaimer: Treatment at iPractice
The information below provides a general description of the Group Treatment: Breaking Patterns. The content is intended for orientation purposes and does not replace personal advice from a clinician.
What is group treatment?
In our Group Treatment: Breaking Patterns, you explore why you keep ending up in similar situations, even if you have already taken steps before or have previously undergone treatment. You learn where these patterns come from, how they continue to affect your life, and what you need in order to deal with them differently.
The treatment is inspired by schema-focused therapy, but has a time-limited, accessible, practical, and positive approach.
How does group treatment work?
The treatment consists of three interconnected components:
1. Gaining insight
You learn to recognize which recurring patterns influence you, such as fear of rejection, putting yourself last, or setting very high standards for yourself. The goal is not to look at what is “wrong,” but to better understand what you do and why.
2. Practicing and applying
In the group and together with the clinicians, you practice new ways of responding. This is done in small steps, with practical assignments, exercises, role-plays, and situations from everyday life.
3. Strengthening your healthy adult
Everyone has a part that can respond calmly, steadily, and resiliently. During the treatment, you work on strengthening this healthy, adult part, so you can set boundaries more effectively, make choices, and connect with others.
How does a group treatment help break patterns?
After completing the treatment, many participants experience:
- more calm and clarity
- better contact with feelings and needs
- clearer boundaries
- more flexibility in difficult situations
- stronger and more pleasant relationships
- less burden from old, limiting patterns
When is this group treatment suitable for me?
This treatment may be a good fit for you if you:
- you notice that certain patterns keep recurring and hold you back
- you have previously received mental health care (GGZ) treatment without sufficient results
- you are curious about the role of your beliefs, habits, and reactions
- you have enough stability to work on personal themes
- you want to grow in relationships, self-confidence, balance, and emotional resilience
Your help request is central/ It is about your personal themes and goals.
What does this group treatment require from me?
- Active participation in the group sessions
- Willingness to reflect on yourself and your patterns
- Openness to practice new behavior, at your own pace
- Between sessions, attention to applying it in everyday life
You always decide for yourself what you share and what you want to work on.
How long does the group treatment take?
The full program takes on average 4 to 6 months and consists of:
1. Individual start phase
1–2 sessions in which you and a group therapist explore your patterns, goals, and wishes.
2. Group phase
Weekly 90-minute group sessions with approximately eight participants.
3. Online support
Interim contact with your online psychologist for questions and support.
4. Completion and aftercare
A short final phase in which you look back on your growth and make a plan to maintain it.

Frequently asked questions about group treatment
Many people find starting in a group exciting. That is completely normal. At the same time, participants often experience that the group actually provides recognition, support, and extra space to practice.
Schema therapy helps you recognize and change long-standing patterns. Breaking Patterns is inspired by these principles and is offered in a time-limited group format. You can find more information via the Dutch Association for Schema Therapy.
